NC REALTORS® Disaster Relief Updates

Volunteers: How you can help

Many REALTORS® have contacted the Foundation since the Hurricane Florence storm system passed through North Carolina.  These community leaders have asked what we need in order to help those impacted by the storm.

Now that we have released Stage 2 funding for those in need of housing, we need Disaster Trustees to support those applicants.

What would I do as a Disaster Trustee? Learn more here: http://ncrealtorshf.org/volunteers-how-you-can-help/

Stage 2 Disaster Relief Efforts Launched

The NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of Stage 2 disaster relief efforts.  Stage 2 includes the release of grants for one month’s rent or mortgage assistance for those who have been impacted by the Hurricane Florence storm system.  You can find our press release here.

Grants are available for up to $1,500 and do not need to be repaid. You can access the application here.

This assistance is available through the generosity of the REALTOR® Relief Foundation, a natural disaster fund managed by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).  NAR has committed up to $500,000 to this effort.

The NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation has also committed $50,000 to this effort.  One hundred percent of all proceeds from this fund will benefit disaster victims.

In addition, REALTORS® in North Carolina and across the country have come to the aid of those in need by donating generously to the Housing Foundation.  You can donate online or mail a check earmarked for disaster relief to: NCRHF, 4511 Weybridge Lane, Greensboro, NC  27407.

From Andrea Bushnell, NC REALTORS® CEO

Just a quick update. First and foremost, I wanted to let you know that our first truck load of supplies is on its way to Jacksonville with Wade Corbett and Seth Palmer taking the lead. Thank you, Wade and Seth!!! But this is an all hands of deck effort on the part of NC REALTORS. Stephanie Walker is working with Cirila Cothran in Carteret. Stephanie is on her way now with a load of supplies for that area. We are gathering supplies now to deliver to Wilmington tomorrow (provided our access road remains open). Patrick Morgan will be helping us drive supplies down in his truck. NC REALTORS staff and I are loading up the van and my SUV to take additional supplies. Mike Barr is doing a call for food and supplies to his members today to add to what we can purchase. Brunswick is still inaccessible and as of about an hour ago we found that all access to Fayetteville and Lumberton are closed. The areas we hope to get relief to in the near future include New Bern, Fayetteville, Lumberton and Brunswick County and their surrounding areas.

In the last 48 hours NC REALTORS has started the following:

  1. Soliciting supplies, food, services, and money to assist the affected areas;
  2. Coordinating distribution centers for supplies at local board offices in affected areas;
  3. Requesting trucks and moving vans owned by our members for use by their clients to deliver items collected in other parts of the state;
  4. Allocated $20,000 for immediate relief effort from the NC REALTORS reserves and will be allocating more as the needs are identified; We believe that the Housing Foundation is going to be adding an addition $5,000 to the $20,000 you allocated over the weekend;
  5. Requesting funds from the National Association of REALTORS to provide displaced persons with financial assistance to pay their mortgage or rent while they are displaced and paying for additional housing (we gave almost $300,000 to victims of Hurricane Matthew);
  6. Reaching out to our 44,000+ members through email and text messages to assess needs. Member are responding in droves. I am going through each response and those that have critical needs are being contacted by our office and their contact information forwarded to local association executives for local support;
  7. Creating a database of volunteers throughout the state to assist once affected areas can be accessed and cleanup can begin; and,
  8. Creating a database of homes and apartments that are available for temporary rentals for those displaced by the storm.

In other words we are staying busy. I will work to keep you updated as new information is available. In the meantime, members will be receiving a communication from NC REALTORS® seeking assistance with our short term housing rental database for units which may be available on a 30, 60 or 90 day basis. If you know of anyone who has an available unit, please email cthomas@ncrealtors.org. This is the most critical need we are seeing coming through from our members right now. So many have lost their homes or their homes are currently uninhabitable, even if they can be repaired eventually.

From President Amy Hedgecock

Video Transcript:

Good morning. This is Amy Hedgecock, your 2018 NC REALTORS® President.

It’s with great sadness that many of our members and communities, as you know, have been devastated by Hurricane Florence. Many areas across the state are not yet out of the woods, as active flooding is expected to continue throughout the week. Many areas of our state, including the entire city of Wilmington, are not accessible; people can’t get in or out of the Wilmington or other areas across the state. Many NC REALTORS®, local association staff, and communities are out of food, water, and fuel. We are in contact with some members whose homes have been decimated, are uninhabitable, and they have no way out. The situation is dire.

Please know that NC REALTORS® staff, members, and local associations who have escaped the worst of Florence are working feverishly to mobilize resources, funding, and volunteers for members and communities hardest hit. The Executive Committee approved $20,000 in emergency funding for initial essential supplies, and NC REALTORS® staff is currently trying to determine the best way to get those supplies into areas that need them most. The NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation is working closely with the National Association of REALTORS® REALTOR® Relief Fund to approve housing relief, and we expect funding to be approved this week. Plans are already underway on how and where to distribute the funds to those who need them most.

Our staff is committed to work tirelessly for our members and communities, and we are dedicated to Hurricane Florence disaster relief until the needs are fully met. We are meeting daily at 8:30 am to strategize our response, and we are in constant communication with state and local officials to monitor needs, road conditions, and potential future flooding threats.

If you have been impacted by the Hurricane Matthew, please complete a two-minute survey at the link on your screen (https://tinyurl.com/NCRneeds), and let us know what your needs are. We are reviewing requests immediately as they come in and assessing how we can help and respond to every need.

If you are fortunate to not be impacted by Hurricane Florence, we need your help. The needs are immense, and we can’t do this without you. Please consider donating to the NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation where 100 percent of the funds are directed to those who need them. Visit the link on your screen (https://tinyurl.com/FlorenceNCR). Earmark your donation to “Disaster Relief.”

Additionally, as we determine the needs of our members and communities across the state, we will be in need of hundreds of volunteers to help with everything from phone trees, to fundraising, to hands-on recovery, to procurement and delivery of supplies. If you can, please consider donating your time to disaster recovery efforts. Fill out the volunteer survey at the link on your screen (https://tinyurl.com/VolunteerNCR).

We will keep you up-to-date with progress and recovery. Stay tuned to our website at ncrealtors.org and social channels for the latest news.

In the meantime, stay safe and be strong. Our thoughts are with you.

Be Epic. Be an NC REALTOR®.
