NC REALTOR® Appraisers – Dedicated to their Profession; Committed to Getting Even Better

11/30/21

Anything related to the housing market has received a lot of media attention lately. The appraisal community has undoubtedly been a part of this increased attention, most of which has been unfavorable and focused on potential racial biases within the appraisal community

Appraisers are an integral part of the home buying process and must adhere to standards set forth in the North Carolina Appraisers Act. The NC Appraisal Board provides oversight and regulation to licensed appraisers and protects the public. Additionally, the Appraisal Section, a division of NC REALTORS®, is committed to adhering to the REALTOR® Code of Ethics and the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice(USPAP).

Together, these groups are supporting the appraisal community and confronting the issue of potential racial bias head-on through guidance, education and a diverse working group. With every negative story, there is a positive one as well.

One example is Dave Massey, 2021 Chair of NCR’s Appraisal Section. As a second-generation appraiser, Massey has been actively engaged in the appraisal of residential, commercial, and industrial properties since 1982. He has served as a member and in leadership roles for various professional and trade associations.

In 2021, under Massey’s leadership, the Appraisal Section used interactive virtual programming to build relationships with real estate brokers and collaborated with industry partners to boost the professionalism of appraisers in the state.

Massey is just one of many licensed professionals committed to learning, recognizing when more education and improvements are needed and upholding the standards of his profession.
