Name: Wayne Young
Hometown: Houston, TX
Current location: Greensboro, NC
Title: Broker-Realtor at Allen Tate Realtors
Number of years in the industry: 16
Why I love what I do: I was a middle school science teacher and administrator for 21 years. In many ways, I still consider myself a teacher – I just teach people how to buy and sell real estate! I especially love the fact that we get to work with people at some of the most critical times in their lives (ex. just had a baby, retiring, transferring to new job, etc.). That is such an honor.
Favorite work story: I work with an investor who has bought and sold many homes through me. One day he called me and said he wanted to sell one of his small rental homes. He added that it had recently had a major fire and that he had collected the insurance payment, but wondered if he could sell it “as is.” We listed it for $9000 and a few weeks later sold it for $11000 (22% over list price – not bad!) to a couple of guys from New Jersey who were going to fix it up and resell it. Fast forward a month. My wife and I were volunteering at a shelter for homeless families and one of our guests came to me at breakfast and said, very excitedly, “Wayne, I found a job! These two guys from New Jersey bought a burned out house and they have hired me to help them fix it up!” I’ve never been more excited for someone.
What I’m most proud of in my career: I have been privileged to help many older adults move from their homes to new housing (retirement communities, family, etc.). It is always a privilege to be a part of these transitions.
Why I’m a member of NC REALTORS®: As a member of the Board of Directors for our local association, I have been made even more aware of the many resources available through NC Realtors and the hard work that goes on “behind the scenes,” so that brokers can do their work effectively.
Fun Fact: Nearly every Friday at 11am you will find me volunteering at the Greensboro Science Center. I scuba dive in the Shark Reef Tank with hundreds of my “fine finned friends,” including 5 sharks and two large green moray eels. It is the highlight of my week, as I get to answer questions from kids lined up in front of the tank and tell them all about the beautiful and fascinating creatures living there (a nod to my science teaching days). Come check it out!
