Housing Help for Western North Carolina

Long-term recovery efforts are still underway in areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. A key part of those efforts is finding temporary housing for our fellow North Carolinians displaced by this disaster.

NC REALTORS® has been working with the NC Department of Commerce and its RenewNC Program to identify ways that we can assist with housing needs.  Those needs range from people who are waiting on repairs or complete rebuilds. We need your help to assist with these temporary housing needs.

Does RenewNC only need long-term housing options?
No, any and all options are needed.

What if I’m concerned about damages?
A General Contractor will sign the lease and assume all responsibility for damages.

Is there an estimate of the current need?
RenewNC has 463 people in their application queue with 81 already placed.

What areas need housing?
The RenewNC Single-Family Housing Program prioritizes low-to-moderate income families with seniors aged 62 and older, children, and/or disabled household members impacted by Hurricane Helene in 29 counties. The greatest need is in the following counties: Buncombe, Henderson, Watauga, Yancey, Avery, Ashe, Cleveland and Haywood.

How much assistance is awarded for housing?
The state will provide TRA assistance based on the following:

  • Family size 1-4 = $103.51/night
  • Family size 5-8 = $207.02/night
  • Family size 9 or more = $310.53/night with a maximum awarded of around $9,315

REALTORS® have a passion for making home ownership a reality and a heart for helping people in need.  By working together, we can assist with RenewNC’s efforts. We ask that you share this information with your members or have them contact Andrea Bushnell.
